Regional Meeting of Young Parliamentarians of the Asia-Pacific The role of young parliamentarians in advancing inclusive and peaceful societies and preventing violent extremism
Colombo (Sri Lanka), 25-26 April 2017

	The Regional Meeting of Young Parliamentarians of the Asia-Pacific will take place on 25 and 26 April 2017 at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Jointly organized by the IPU, the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Meeting will be on The role of young parliamentarians in advancing inclusive and peaceful societies and preventing violent extremism. In recent years, the world has witnessed new waves of violent extremism that have taken the lives of many innocent people. Preventing violent extremism (PVE) must now go beyond adopting traditional short-term, security-orientated strategies. The world now needs strategies which incorporate long-term changes at the structural level by eliminating inequalities and marginalization and promoting peace and tolerance, all efforts to which young people have to be able to contribute. Parliaments, and especially young parliamentarians, have a key role to play in in advancing inclusive and peaceful societies and preventing violent extremism. This Meeting will build awareness of PVE issues and identify parliamentary action to be taken by young parliamentarians. It will empower young parliamentarians by building their capacities and offering them opportunities for networking and cooperation. The Meeting is open to young men and women members of national parliaments in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as IPU observers and selected youth organizations, networks and associations. The Meeting will be conducted in English.
