As part of their constitutional mandate to ensure a stable society by building democracy, parliaments have a pivotal role to play in conflict prevention and management.

It is precisely to enable them to take up the challenges associated with this important question that the National Assembly of Côte d’Ivoire and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) have jointly organized a Regional Parliamentary Conference on The role of parliaments in conflict prevention and management in West Africa from 28 to 30 October 2013.

The purpose of this event was to make parliamentarians aware of the significant contribution they can make to crisis prevention and management as part of efforts aimed at securing lasting peace, a prerequisite for socio-political and economic stability.

The Conference was open to all members of parliament in the West Africa sub-region. Parliamentarians from the African Parliamentary Union (APU), the Parliament of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), representatives of the ECOWAS Commission, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), the Amani Forum, international organizations and civil society did also participate.
