Democracy 2030 – imagining the future of democracy

IPU Event

This debate is part of IPU’s invitation and challenge to all parliaments to think about the future of democracy. “Democracy 2030” raises a series of questions:

  • Future-oriented: What will democracy look like in 2030? Will people vote online in elections? Crowdsource laws? Will the role of parliament be the same as it is today?
  • Youth-oriented: What are parliaments doing to ensure the political participation of young people and prepare the future of democracy? What progress has been made and what needs to be done?
  • Development-oriented: How can parliaments connect the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with people’s expectations of greater participation, inclusiveness and accountability? In what ways will more democracy help to achieve the development goals adopted by the world’s governments?

Faced with a rise in populisms and rejection of political elites, do our institutions need to change?

The debate takes place at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies on 21 September at 6pm. Students of the Graduate Institute, members of the international community and Geneva residents are warmly invited to attend. The debate is part of the programme of activities for the Democracy Week organized by the Chancellerie d’Etat of Geneva.

Global Legislative Openness Week

Global Legislative Openness Week

The third annual GLOW (Global Legislative Openness Week) runs from 12-18 September 2016. This week of openness activities around the world is hosted by the Legislative Openness Working Group of the Open Government Partnership and members of the parliamentary openness community.  The objective is to collaborate in order to make progress in terms of adopting and implementing openness commitments.

GLOW serves as a nexus for different legislative openness activities organized by different civil society organizations and parliaments worldwide.

You can follow GLOW on Twitter using the hashtag #OpenParl16.

Eight ways to get involved:

  • Help gather global comparative information on legislative openness
  • Participate or host a tweet talk
  • Share information about the open government partnership
  • Gather pledges of support for the declaration on parliamentary openness
  • Spark the creation of open source digital government tools for your community
  • Be a catalyst to foster dialogue between parliaments, civil society and citizens
  • Help formalize government commitments in the legislative branch
  • Advocate for increased openness in your legislature.

International IDEA

IDEA Activity

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance is organizing a conference to focus on democratic politics. The conference will concentrate on the opportunities, limitations and prospects of participatory democracy in Sweden, Europe and worldwide. The conference will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, on Thursday 15 September and is the result of the collaboration between the EU Commission in Sweden, International IDEA, the Embassy of Switzerland and Demokratiskolan (the Democracy School at Studiefrämjandet).

The objective of the conference is to reinforce awareness and knowledge about democratic politics. It will address questions on how to inspire citizens to take a more active role in their own future. Leading politicians, researchers, and representatives of the civil society will be present to discuss measures to reinforce the connection between citizens and political institutions on a local, regional, national and transnational level.

There will be seminars to cover different political levels and also workshops where suggestions from the seminar will be discussed, voted on and used to draft concrete proposals.
