Over the past five years, the Inter-Parliamentary Union has organised regional seminars aimed at improving MPs' and parliamentary staffers' understanding of the three phases of the budgetary process (elaboration, reading in Parliament and oversight) and its gender implications. The seminar in El Salvador, the sixth of the series, brought together parliamentarians and parliamentary staffers from the Latin American region to debate ways and mechanisms to strengthen their role in the budgetary process, through an exchange of experience. It devoted an important amount of time to debating gender-sensitive national budgets.
The Seminar was organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the National Legislative Assembly of El Salvador and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and took place at Hotel Presidente in San Salvador (El Salvador), from 19 to 21 September 2005.
