Mandate The mandate of the Committee includes consideration of trade negotiation outcomes, hearings with negotiators and experts, oversight of national policy compliance with international trade commitments and consideration of all proposed legislation relating to international trade.
Membership The Committee is composed of 8 members who are nominated by the Standing Orders Committee and whose term lasts one session (one year).
Working methods Issues of public interest and current topical issues are identified and put on the agenda. The proceedings are open to the public, unless the Committee decides otherwise. The Committee can summon government officials and private citizens, and decisions are made by simple majority. The main sources of information are the government and international and local NGOs. Annual reports are issued through the House.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee is mandated to issue at least one report to parliament per year. It may also issue periodic reports on topical issues, as and when the need arises.
Relations with external bodies Government and civil society are invited to provide information to the Committee. It is not customary for the members to attend negotiating forums as part of official delegations.
Subjects dealt with The Committee has recently dealt with the following issues: government policy on trade-related international agreements, and the benefits derived by Zambia from the COMESA Free Trade Area.
