Mandate The Committee deals with issues related to trade, industry and tourism. The Committee examines laws, by-laws and exercises parliamentary oversight of government policy in these fields. The Committee has also reported to the plenary of the House on the ratification of the convention for the establishment of the World Trade Organization.
Membership The Committee is composed of a Chairperson, a Vice-Chairperson and eight members, nominated by the Selection Committee, taking into consideration the number of the seats held by each political party in the House. The term of the Committee is the same as the term of the House, i.e. five years.
Working methods The Chairperson of the Committee, in collaboration with the other members, selects the items on the agenda. Proceedings are public with certain exceptions if the committee so decides. Ministers, government official, semi-governmental agencies, trade unions and individuals are invited to take part in the meetings of the Committee. The decisions of the committees of the House are taken by majority vote and their reports are sent to the plenary of the House for its final decision.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee collaborates with the competent ministry and usually the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism informs the Committee about Government strategies both prior to and following the decisions of the Council of Ministers. The reports of the Committee are sent to all the members of the House for deliberation and vote.
Relations with external bodies The Committee has close relations with the government, intergovernmental bodies, employers and industrial associations and trade unions. The Chairperson and members of the Committee attend seminars in Cyprus and abroad.
Subjects dealt with Issues most frequently dealt with recently were: the trade of various products such as potatoes and olive oil; the price of petrol and electricity; the problems of the tourist industry; the scheme for the establishment of golf courses, etc.
