The Committee has 21 members, who are elected annually by the Chamber of Deputies at the start of each session.<p>Composition by sex: 14 men (66.7%), and 7 women (33.3%). |
| Working methods |
The Committee meets when convened by its Chair. Deliberations are conducted in closed session. The Committee adopts its own agenda, and its decisions are taken by majority vote-a majority also constituting a quorum. The Committee can hold hearings to question members of the government and any other persons whose counsel is considered necessary. It conducts frequent visits to various public and private establishments in the country's provinces for the purposes of advancing the condition of women. |
| Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
The Committee's Chair and rapporteur are ex officio officers of the Chamber. Two or more committees may hold joint meetings to consider draft legislation within their respective purviews. Such meetings are chaired by the president of the Chamber or by one of its vice-presidents, or by the Chair of the committee entrusted with preparing the report. A legislative bill can also be considered sequentially by several committees. |
| Relations with external bodies |
The Committee can summon members of the government, specialists, or responsible officials from national institutions or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) concerned with women's affairs and the family, as well as any other relevant experts. |
| Subjects dealt with |
The Committee considered the draft 2006 budget for the Ministry of Women's Affairs, the Family, Children, and the Elderly, providing an opportunity to discuss the full range of women's issues with the government. It also adopted a convention creating an organization of Arab women (Law No. 9/2003 of 6 February 2003). |
