Membership The Committee for National Communities comprises a Chair and a Deputy Chair (both representatives of the Italian and Hungarian national communities in Slovenia) and 6 members.
Working methods The Commission discusses draft laws and other acts referred to it by the President of the National Assembly which concern the status of the Italian and Hungarian national communities in Slovenia. On its own initiative, it may discuss any issue which, in its opinion, has or might have an impact on the status of the Italian and Hungarian national communities in Slovenia. Commission meetings are open to the public.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Commission cooperates with other working bodies when discussing a draft law or other act falling within the competence of the working body concerned.
Relations with external bodies The Commission cooperates with the Government Office for Nationalities; the Institute for Nationality Issues; and self-governing organisations of the Italian and Hungarian national communities (there are two main self-governing organisations and smaller organisations operating in bilingual municipalities).
Subjects dealt with The Commission has examined issues covering culture, schooling, financing of education, organisation and functioning of the administration in areas where members of the Italian and Hungarian national communities reside. The Commission for National Communities addresses issues concerning fundamental human rights, although its powers in such respect are rather restricted. The powers of the Commission for National Communities are limited to regulating and addressing issues exclusively related to the Italian and Hungarian national communities.
