Mandate |
The Commission for Relations with Slovenes in Neighbouring and Other Countries deals with issues concerning the autochthonous Slovene national minorities in neighbouring countries and Slovenes living in other countries, and the allocation of financial assistance through the Office for Slovenes Abroad; it oversees and provides for the implementation of the Resolution on the Status of Autochthonous Slovene Minorities in Neighbouring Countries and the hereto related tasks of government and other bodies of the Republic of Slovenia; it maintains regular contact with the representatives of Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries and reports to the National Assembly on relevant issues and prepares draft decisions; it informs the competent working bodies of the National Assembly on issues relating to individual draft laws and other acts concerning Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries; it cooperates with the Committee on Foreign Policy on foreign policy issues concerning Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries; it discusses initiatives and proposals submitted by various organisations of Slovenes in neighbouring and other countries in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly and it co-operates with other State authorities in the field of relations with Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries. |
Membership |
The Commission comprises a Chair, a Deputy Chair and four members. Members are representatives of all parliamentary parties. Their term of office is 4 years. |
Working methods |
The Commission works pursuant to the National Assembly's programme and in accordance with its powers. The work of the Commission is public. Representatives of the Government and, if necessary, representatives of Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries and the general public are invited to Commission meetings. Through reports, the Commission transmits its decisions to the Government, certain working bodies and the public. The Commission maintains regular contacts with Slovenes in neighbouring and other countries and pays periodical visits to them, if necessary. |
Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
The Commission deals with draft legislation relating directly or indirectly to Slovenes in neighbouring and other countries, and forwards its opinions and proposals to the bodies responsible for such laws. |
Relations with external bodies |
The Commission regularly cooperates with the Government Office for Slovenes Abroad and invites its representatives to attend Commission meetings. In individual projects, the Commission cooperates with the Government and its technical services. The Commission also cooperates with NGOs. |

In its work, the Commission mostly focuses on monitoring regularly the status of indigenous Slovene national minorities in neighbouring countries and of Slovenes abroad; overseeing the implementation of the Resolution on the Status of Autochthonous Slovene National Minorities in Neighbouring Countries and hereto related tasks of the Governement and other bodies of the republic of Slovenia and Resolution on Relations with Slovenes Abroad; maintaining regular contacts with representatives of Slovenes in neighbouring and other countries (such as visits, and organising regular meetings with Slovenes living in neighbouring and other countries). The Commission for the Relations with Slovenes in Neighbouring and Other Countries addresses issues concerning fundamental human rights, although its powers in such respect are rather restricted. The Commission for the Relations with Slovenes in Neighbouring and Other Countries deals exclusively with the position and development of the Slovenian community living outside the Republic of Slovenia. |
