General nationwide elections had previously been held in April/May. | |

The Constitution of the new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, promulgated on 27 April 1992, provided for parliamentary representation for Serbia (together with its autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina) and Montenegro - the two republics remaining after the break-up of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. As a result, and under the terms of the relevant former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. As a result, and under the terms of the relevant Electoral Law, multiparty polling took place for a reduced number of federal Deputies from these two territories.
Altogether 23 parties contested the 138 Chamber of Citizens seats, but the poll was boycotted by opposition parties grouped in Democratic Movement of Serbia, as well as by the Albanian community of Kosovo. Final results gave the Socialist Party of Serbia of President Slobodan Milosevic 73 seats, followed by the right-wing Serbian Radical Party and the ex-communist Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro. Voter turnout was reportedly 55.8% in Serbia and 57.45% in Montenegro, figures disputed by the opposition. The federal Deputies of the Chamber of Republics were elected by the republican assemblies according to party representation in these legislatures. On 14 July, the Federal Assembly elected Mr. Milan Panic as Federal Prime Minister. The composition of his Federal Executive Council (Cabinet) was announced the same day. New premature federal elections have been scheduled for late 1992 on the basis of enabling legislation. |
