Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members' term of office. | |
The 1989 parliamentary elections were held simultaneously with those for Luxembourg's representatives to the European Parliament.
The election campaign was characterized by a multiplicity of party lists, which included nationalists, ecologists and a pension-focused group (5/6 Action Committee). Polling results favoured these groups to the detriment of the "traditionnal" parties, which all lost seats; the three largest (Christian Socials, Socialists and Democrats) fell by the same number: three. These losses were also partly due to the constitutional revision of December 1988 that reduced the Chamber of Deputies membership from 64 to 60. Despite this outcome, the Christian Socials and Socialists renewed their governing coalition, having two-thirds of the parliamentary seats between them. The Prime Minister is Mr. Jacques Santer (PCS). |
