Note on the distribution of seats:
- The "distribution of seats" above refers to the final composition of the Council of States after the one-third renewal of members in 2012.
- Indirect elections were held on 19 and 30 January, 30 March, 3 May and 25 June 2012 to renew a total of 67 of the 233 indirectly-elected seats through 65 biennal elections and two by-elections.
- In addition, five of the 12 appointed seats were also renewed.
- The distribution of seats according to political parties for the seats renewed in 2012 was not available from the Rajya Sabha.
- The number of seats held by the Indian National Congress (INC) includes two appointed members.
- Five women were indirectly elected and two were appointed in 2012. As at 6 August 2012, there were 26 women out of the full 245 members.
